The fact that Michael Synes is a Midwest-born singer-songwriter with platinum records in Poland perfectly sums up the possibilities of his career in many ways. A self-taught musician in a small town, he seemed to build a career with pure hustle and soulful composition. And he was also the son who had lost his father and pursued an unlikely dream of quitting his job. And while the music itself may be difficult to define (often folk-to-pop, R&B-to-country, and again vibrate), the intent behind it is a unified element. The unmistakable truth that you never strive for less than what is true and true.
After Synes lost his father to autoimmune disease when he was 25, he decided to respect his father's legacy after chasing the ambition he was putting off. At the time, he was working at a residential treatment center for teenagers and was doing occasional shows on weekends. "It was an important thing and in many ways shaped me today I am. But the harsh reality of realizing how fast life can change has made me realize how I want to spend my time here."
This was also when he fell in love, adopted a daughter, and tried to build a house. "I think it was helpful in many ways because there was no excuse. I had a mouth to feed. What maimed me when music was purely a journey for myself was the idea that everything had to have a deep meaning. It was once simply supporting a family, but we could see everything through the lens of simply building a life together."
Synes was often seen as a strong local candidate to open for national performances when he passed through town and even finished his tour with platinum recording artist Howie Day. "It's transformed as I play in a theater full of people who aren't obliged to buy what I sell on stage. But I realized that I could get their attention just by talking and singing. It was a groundbreaking experience."
Now, Synes has tried to become one of the most popular performers in the Midwest. Recently sold out his first theater show and built a fully immersive live performance concept that includes up to a nine-member band paired with video and lighting shows. Mixing acoustic and full-band landscapes with shades of several genres, his songs ripened to a lyrical depth that was hardly paired with such mainstream appeal. What seems to separate Synes is undoubtedly his vocal style. With its fascinating range and falsetto, his acoustic finger-picking style serves as the perfect bed of warmth for his soulful lyrics to rest.
Michael Shynes - Rundown Streetlights
lyrics
Violet as a color crayon
We were running through the fields
You had flowers in your hand
We were all chasing phantoms
Baby, you would hold them still, and I'd grab 'em
Yeah, if you're scared of the dark
Let the rundown streetlights be your stars, and then
Picture swings in the park, and I'll swing with you
Sing it
(Ooh) sing it with me
(Ooh) sing it with me
(Ooh) and we'll go howling at the moon
It's no use living if you're already dead
It's not worth saying if it's already said
Even if it all goes over your head
Believe it if you want to
So keep your eyes on the road and your head in the stars
Follow it down the rabbit hole just a little while longer
You can change anything if you want to
Sing it like, ooh-ooh
If you want to
Sing it like, ooh-ooh
If you want to
The next time I turn around (I turn around)
You'll have grown into a woman in a single bound
I hope I never take you for granted
Spending time with you is all that I wanted
But I'll go back to when you were small
Burning all our favourite records onto CD-ROM
We were splitting headphones in a hammock
To a soundtrack, we could get lost in
sing it with me
(Ooh) sing it with me
(Ooh) and we'll go howling at the moon
It's no use living if you're already dead
It's not worth saying if it's already said
Even if it all goes over your head
Believe it if you want to
So keep your eyes on the road and your head in the stars
Follow it down the rabbit hole just a little while longer
You can change anything if you want to
Sing it like, ooh-ooh
If you want to (if you want to)
Sing it like, ooh-ooh
If you want to
If you're scared of the dark
Let the rundown streetlights be your stars
Let them know who we are
Let them shine for you
It's no use living if you're already dead
It's not worth saying if it's already said
Even if it all goes over your head
Believe it if you want to
So keep your eyes on the road and your head in the stars
Follow it down the rabbit hole just a little while longer
You can change anything if you want to
Said, it's not worth living if you're already dead
It's not worth saying if it's already said
Even if it all goes straight to your head
Believe it if you want to
Believe it if you want to
